Surveying the holomap display of the ongoing battle, Colonel Oopley was pleased with the high-performance mech armor. Theyâd take the wall, and while the enemy was reeling from the blow, heâd drop the infantry and armor regiments, who would seize this section of wall. This would then serve as a staging ground to assault the other sections of wall, and once secured, the city beyond could be put to siege. After starving them out, with intermittent artillery fire to incite fear in the populace and what defenders remained, heâd gladly accept the city prefectsâ full surrender. Then Coldist banners would fly high over this cesspit of 78th sympathies, and Iâll be hailed as a hero. His internal monologue stoked the self-importance of the colonelâs eager ambitions.
âColonel, our attaché wishes to speak with you in your quarters, sir.â Ensign Ionowayâs report interrupted the flow of self-aggrandizement inflating the colonelâs bulging ego.
âWhat did I say about interrupting me when I am thinking, Ensign?â Colonel Oopley verbally lashed his ensign.
Ensign Ionoway stood up and saluted the colonel as he said, âMy apologies, sir. You also told me to relay all information related to the attaché at once.â He remained at attention.
âRight.â Colonel Oopley rubbed his lower jaw. âEnsign, you have command while I am gone. Contact me immediately should there be any new developments.â He stood up and began walking to the bridgeâs rear exit. He waved a hand behind him as he spoke in the condescending way superiors or petulant children did when they did not have enough time to stay and relay their commands face to face.
âOf course, sir.â Ensign Ionoway was still standing erect and saluting.
As Colonel Oopley reached the door, he glanced back. âAt ease, Ensign. I will overlook your dereliction of orders. This time, anyway.â
Ensign Ionoway let out a breath and relaxed his whole body. âThank you, sir. It wonât happen again, sir.â
âI trust that it wonât.â After he stepped from the bridge, the automatic door closed behind him with a swish. A trooper in full battle armor stood guard by the door, rifle cradled. From the bridge, he made his way along the carrierâs command tower toward the rear, where his personal quarters were located. Reaching the door with a placard bearing his name on it, he stepped up to the door lock panel and pressed his thumb against the reader. He couldnât let just anybody into his quarters, especially with so many vindictive land sailors and soldiers around the carrier eager to get back at the colonel for one thing or the other. Heâd certainly gained his fair share of enemies among the enlisted, and the officers beneath him as well.
Inside his quarters, lounging on a lavish purple couch, was a Yollin with four legs. His mandibles perked up as Colonel Oopley entered. âAhh, Colonel! I am glad you received my summons. I hope you donât mind that Iâve gotten into your wine.â He raised the
